Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Massage

The TMJ is a complex joint used in daily activities including speaking, eating and swallowing.

During your first appointment, your therapist will conduct an assessment to get down to the potential causes of your dysfunction and use various techniques to alleviate discomfort and restore normal function.

TMJ dysfunction can present with symptoms including but not limited to;

  • Jaw pain

  • Limited movement or locking jaw

  • Clicking and/or discomfort with chewing, yawning or speaking

  • Ear pain, itchiness, ringing, fullness

  • Neck pain

  • Headaches

Potential causes;

  • Misaligned bite

  • History of orthodontic work

  • Injury to the head, neck or jaw

  • Stress

  • Grinding (bruxism)

  • Arthritis in the joint

  • Postural tension and habits

What to expect during your treatment

  • Assessment and health history review

  • Treatment to the external jaw, neck and head

  • Intra oral treatment to target the deeper tissues (this is done by the therapist using gloves and with consent)

  • Remedial exercises

  • Education on lifestyle changes to alleviate jaw strain

This treatment is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist and can be submitted under Massage Therapy for insurance.
